Olympic gold medalist Tessa Sanderson CBE challenged accountancy professionals to strive for excellence at a recent business lecture.

The lecture was held for the Midlands members of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA). Held at Aston Villa Football club the lecture was entitled “Path to Glory”. 140 people attended the event to listen to Tessa who spoke about her success both on and off the field.

The event was sponsored by Higgs & Sons – a Midlands based law firm. Glyn Morris, finance director at the firm said: "It was hugely successful, giving accountancy and business leaders from across the region the chance to hear how sporting professionals achieve their goals and overcome so many challenges in order to win."

The highlight of the lecture was when Mrs Barbara Richards, Tessa’s former high school teacher and inspiration behind her success made a surprise appearance after reading about the event in a local paper.

Tessa was the UK’s leading javelin thrower from the early 1970’s enjoying success at the European Championships and Commonwealth Games. Her first Olympic gold came in 1984 in the Javelin – she became the first ever British black woman to win an Olympic gold.

Currently Tessa is actively involved in the 2012 Olympics and the Elite Training Programme for young people with sporting talent.

The ACCA is the global body for accountancy professionals with 122,000 members and 325,000 students worldwide, 80 offices and 350 exam centres in 160 countries. The Midlands Members Network of the ACCA organises a programme of meetings designed to enable members to meet their own CPD requirements and also to network with fellow ACCA members.
