Graduate recruitment will most likely be down across the board this year - except for accountants.

Nearly half of all firms will not be looking to hire graduates or school-leavers in the months ahead, a report by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development suggests.

However, graduate recruiters tell career advisers that there are opportunities for potential accountants.

Seismic changes to the economy have influenced all professions, but what is the current state of the graduate market for potential accountants?

The answer to this pressing question came at ACCA’s (the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants) event Accountancy careers in a changing economy, which was held at the Imperial War Museum, London.

“The over riding message was positive” said Dorothy Wood, Head of Education for ACCA UK. “All of the employers who attended are continuing their graduate programmes.  Yes, the market is more competitive, but there are still many opportunities out there. The key for prospective applicants is to make themselves stand out; highlight your experience, and show that you are an excellent communicator.”

The purpose of the day was to give graduate employers an opportunity to meet with careers advisors, so they could discuss the opportunities available to future graduates. Representatives from KPMG, Sainsbury’s, BDO Stoy Hayward, Centrica, VT Group, Tenon, RSM Bentley Jennison, and Transport for London were in attendance.

Vicky Inch, Tenon Academy and HR projects manger, Tenon Group said:

“In the current economic climate, businesses need accurate information and sensible business advice, making the accountancy profession more valued than ever.

“Our graduate intake continues to be essential to our business, which is why we look for applicants who demonstrate the ability to communicate clearly, solve problems, use initiative and demonstrate common sense.

“Tenon are advisers to entrepreneurs, therefore successful applicants will find they are exposed to a huge variety of real issues in a variety of businesses giving them the rounded commercial background that will really help them excel in their career, whichever direction it takes them.”

The event also gave three ACCA members, all of who graduated in the past five years, the chance to offer advice and to discuss their experiences with the attending careers advisors.
