Bank's customers hit with computer problem that blocked access to accounts

Thousands of Barclays (LON:BARC) customers were affected by an access 'blackout' to their accounts on Saturday, one of the busiest shopping days of the week. Barclays is still investigating the computer glitch which left customers unable to access their accounts or withdraw any money.

The bank's system froze on Saturday afternoon from about 2pm, forcing customers to abandon purchases at tills and unable to use ATMs or telephone and online banking services nationwide.

A Barclays spokeswoman was unable to elaborate on the cause of the computer problem, and the bank's customer service centres were inundated with complaint calls from annoyed customers. It is thought to have been triggered by a power failure, some reports say.

The spokeswoman told the BBC, "We became aware of the problem - which was resolved quickly - early on Saturday afternoon. We apologise to customers for any inconvenience."

She added it was still not yet clear what had caused the glitch, but said the company was looking into it "as a matter of priority", the BBC reported.

The bank had restored its services on Sunday, with a source close to the group saying that a power failure had caused problems for 20 minutes, The Independent reports. However, reports on Saturday indicated that the network problems began at 12.30pm and were still not resolved by the evening. Seven hours after the problems began, the Reuters news service was told the problem was "ongoing", reports The Independent.

Barclays announced on 16 August that it had outsourced management and maintenance services for 550 remote and host operated ATMs to NCR under a two-year contract. NCR took on the role of helpdesk services, incident management, first- and second-line maintenance and managing cash replenishment services, and refused to comment yesterday.
