Update: Anglo American neither confirms nor denies likelihood of Xstrata deal.

The board at Anglo American (LON:AAL ) has sent out a press release in response to speculation that a merger with Xstrata is nigh.

The release confirmed that the Board of Anglo American had received a preliminary proposal from Xstrata (LON:XTA).

Anglo certainly chose the most non-commital language when they said that the proposal, "may or may not lead to a transaction involving the Group."

"It should be noted that this situation is at a very preliminary stage and that there is no certainty that any transaction will be forthcoming. A further announcement will be made if and when appropriate."

Anglo American shares have surged this morning on the back of the news, coming in over 6% up by late morning.

Xstrata on the other hand has suffered on the markets. The Xstrata share price is down 3.38%
