A BMW UK finance director was sentenced to six weeks in prison at Banbury Magistrates Court on Friday, after lying about a speeding offence.
In addition to the prison sentence, Banbury Magistrates Court fined Thomas Moser £1,200 for speeding and ordered him to pay £60 costs. He was also disqualified from driving for three months. Moser, 48, is finance director at the BMW-owned Mini factory in Oxford. He was caught by a speed enforcement van just after 7am on 4 May 2007 driving a Mini at 101mph on Oxford's 50mph eastern bypass. The car executive, a German national with a 20-year career at BMW, pleaded guilty to making a false written statement. He claimed that his 19-year old son Maximilian was driving at the time of the offence - despite photographic evidence to the contrary - even after police gave him three chances to correct his story. BMW Group employs around 8,000 people in the UK motor industry across three main production plants plus an additional 11,000 in its 158-strong UK dealer network. The Group has created 1,250 new and permanent jobs since 2000. Plant Oxford employs 4,500 associates and builds Minis to individual customer order on three shifts, seven days a week. Since the market launch of Mini in 2001, production has increased from a planned volume of 100,000 units a year to just under 190,000 in 2004. In February 2005, the BMW Group announced it would invest a further £100 million in expanding and increasing flexibility at the plant by 2007, creating 200 new jobs in the process. UK is the third largest market and the second biggest production base for the BMW Group worldwide, and the only country where BMW Group's three brands - BMW, MINI and Rolls-Royce Motor Cars - are represented.
