Business leaders receive honours Print E-mail

The chief executives of the London Stock Exchange and FirstGroup are included in the Birthday Honours List.

Canadian-born Clara Furse, chief executive of the London Stock Exchange since 2001, was made a Dame.

Moir Lockhead, chief executive of the much criticised but highly profitable bus and train firm FirstGroup, received a knighthood.  

William Sargent, executive chair of the Better Regulation Executive at the department for business, enterprise and regulatory reform, was also recognised with a knighthood, as was the City of London Corporation's policy chairman Michael Snyder.

Others on the list, published on HM The Queen's official birthday, include Tim Burr, comptroller and auditor-general at the National Audit Office, and Stephen Quinn, permanent secretary at the department of enterprise, trade and investment for the Northern Ireland Executive, who were both made Companions of the Order of the Bath (CB).

Julia Cleverdon, the former chief executive of Business in the Community, was made a Dame. There were CBEs for Chris Davidson, national business director at HM Revenue & Customs, and Graham Parker, head of public sector finance at the Treasury, and William McQueen, lately deputy chief executive at the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service for the Scottish Executive. 

Alan Parker, chief executive officer of Whitbread Group, received a CBE for services to hospitality, while Mervyn Ainsworth, lately chief executive of the Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators was recognised with a CBE for services to business.

Richard Gillingwater, who chairs the Shareholder Executive, and John Campbell, chair of the Scottish Financial Enterprise, both received CBEs for services to the financial services industry.

Guardian Media Group chief executive Carolyn McCall received an OBE for services to women in business, whereas Jane Scott Paul, chief executive at the Association of Accounting Technicians, received an OBE for services to the accountancy profession.

Robert McGowan, head waiter at Lloyd's, was awarded an MBE for services to the financial services industry in London.
