BUPA’s chief executive Val Gooding is to be succeeded by Ray King, who joined the group as finance director in 2001.

Gooding has been CEO since 1998 and will retire at the company’s AGM in May.

Lord Leitch, BUPA’s chairman, said that Val Gooding had transformed the business in her time as CEO.

“The group has more than doubled its turnover to over £4  billion, doubled its customer base to eight million, consistently delivered double digit growth in surpluses and established a reputation for excellent customer service,” he added.

Under Gooding’s leadership BUPA has grown its home market and its diversification strategy has driven significant expansion of health and care services in Australia, New Zealand, Spain, Saudi Arabia, Denmark, and the US.

BUPA is an international health and care company with bases on three continents and more than seven million customers.

As a provident association, BUPA does not have shareholders and reinvests its surpluses into improved health and care facilities such as medical equipment, the latest technology and buildings.

BUPA's biggest and original business is health insurance in the UK, both for individuals and corporations that want to look after the health of their employees.

More than half of the UK's top companies are BUPA customers.

King, 53, was appointed group finance director of BUPA in August 2001. He is a Chartered Accountant and a non-executive  director of Friends Provident plc.

King is a former deputy chief executive and group finance director of Parity Group Plc, a former director of group finance and control at Diageo Plc and former group finance director of Southern Water Plc.
