Friends Provident poaches Matthews from Standard Life Print E-mail

The board of Standard Life plc has announced that Trevor Matthews has resigned as chief executive of UK Financial Services, and from the board.

Australian-born Matthews was poached by Standard Life’s (LSE:SL) rival Friends Provident (LSE:FP) to become the insurer’s new group chief executive.

Before joining Standard Life in 2004, Matthews held two key positions at Manulife Financial Corporation - executive vice president in Canada and subsequently president and chief executive, Japan.

Before to that he held senior positions in both National Australia Bank and Legal & General Australia.

Sandy Crombie, group chief executive, will lead Standard Life’s UK Financial Services until a successor for Matthews has been appointed.

Crombie said, ‘Trevor Matthews, with his experience of Australia, Japan and Canada, played an important role during our transition from a mutual business to a listed plc.  We have a strong team who, I’m sure, will relish the opportunity to continue the growth in our UK Business’.
