Catherine Macleod has been appointed a special adviser to the Chancellor of the Exchequer.

She will take up her post on 3 December. Macleod has been the UK political editor of The Glasgow Herald for the past eight years. Before that she worked as a freelance journalist, including for Grampian Television.

She will work closely with the Chancellor's existing special adviser, Sam White, and members of the Council of Economic Advisers, Andrew Maugham and Emily Thomas, who are employed on special adviser terms. Jennifer Gerber is special adviser to the chief secretary.

Macleod will also work closely with the Treasury press office. Steve Field, head of communications and strategy, who has overall responsibility for the Treasury's media arrangements, is the Chancellor's principal spokesman on economic and policy issues.
