Livingstone calls Tube strikes 'unreasonable' Print E-mail

When the trade unions met the Mayor they said that while they welcomed his intervention, they also wanted assurances from their employers, Metronet and the PPP Administrator. The PPP Administrator and Metronet have subsequently written to the trade unions today providing the assurances for which they were asked. Their letter, signed by Alan Bloom, PPP Administrator and Andrew Lezala Chief Executive Officer Metronet BCV/SSL provides all of the assurances requested by the trade unions with regard to jobs, transfers and pensions.

Ken Livingstone said: "With clear assurances from the Administrator and Metronet that there will be no job cuts, transfers or losses in pensions as a result of the collapse of Metronet, and my clear commitments for the future security of all Metronet staff, it would be unreasonable to proceed with strikes which will disrupt the lives of millions of Londoners and lose Metronet employees considerable sums in pay. Having ensured that employees’ concerns have been met, we should now work together to ensure that the Metronet contracts can be taken over by London Underground with the minimum possible delay."

A Transport for London spokesperson said on Monday: "Both the Mayor and the direct employers, the Administrator and Metronet, have given the trades unions clear written assurances that meet all of their concerns, namely that there will be no job cuts or transfers as a result of the collapse of Metronet and no loss of pensions now or at any time in the future."

"London Underground, Metronet, the Administrator and ACAS all yesterday asked Bob Crow what further assurances the RMT is seeking.  There has been no response. We are still prepared to meet any reasonable requests to meet first thing or throughout today, as it is clearly unreasonable to proceed with a strike when all of the trades unions’ concerns have been met, and without the RMT informing us what they seek to achieve."

However, RMT general secretary Bob Crow denied that any of the other parties had contacted him over the weekend.

"There has been no contact over the weekend from Metronet or the administrator so as far as we are concerned the strike will definitely go ahead."
